Here are some zero waste swaps you can do right now to start your journey into a low impact lifestyle.
We know how overwhelming and scary it seems at first to make the switch into creating less waste. It seems almost impossible, where will you find alternatives? Where do you start? How do you start?! – Well, it’s super super easy and we are here to help you with a few easy swaps you can do straight away! Read on and get started today.
1. Straws SUCK. Say no to plastic straws!
One of the first and most simplest things you can do to start reducing your impact is simply saying no to plastic straws!
Did you know that 500 million straws are discarded a day in the US alone. A DAY! Think of how many more straws around the world are being tossed into landfill or making it’s way into the ocean to wreck havoc on marine life. Every. Single. Day. – Mind blowing right?
If straws are your thing, your teeth are too sensitive for iced drinks without one or you want to keep your lipstick looking fresh on a date then investing in a reusable straw to carry around with you is the way to go. No problemo!
There are several types of reusable straws you can use:
Just remember to say NO to those pesky plastic straws. It’s easy to get caught out and forget, but the more you do it the more it becomes a habit. And if you have your straws with you in a handy little travel pouch like this one, where you can keep them all together including the cleaner then you are bound not to forget!
2. Ditch the plastic bags. Go canvas.
If you are not already doing this then you absolutely must! – You can literally do it instantly! Ditch using plastic bags at the super market, or any shop for that matter. Opt for a reusable bag that packs small into your hand bag or backpack and just pull it out when you need it.
Canvas bags have grown in popularity since the zero waste movement expanded and there are so many designs and sizes you can get these days. Why even bother with those ugly plastic bags? You cannot – ever – fashion a plastic bag haha!
3. Strip down at bath time – Bars instead of bottles.
By switching to bars in your bathroom you can reduce the waste you produce straight away. There are all sorts of soap, shampoo & conditioner bars to choose from and there are many stores out there that specialise in such, like Lush.
If you are a lady and use feminine wash, do not fear! This glycerine bar is perfect for sensitive skin and sensitive areas 😉 You know what we mean ladies? <3
We bet if you got up right now and opened your pantry cupboard or your fridge that you would find a glass jar in there? Go on, go ahead. We will wait right here. *Waits patiently* – Ok done? So? Thought so….
4. Don’t recycle your jars – Reuse them!
Glass jars are your best friend! And they look blooming’ great in a zero waste kitchen/pantry. Right?!
Don’t throw them away or recycle them any more. Save them and use them in your home! If you don’t actually have any in your house but would really like to start using them for storage there’s load of ways you can start collecting them. And absolutely for free!
Ask your family and friends if they want theirs, and if they don’t take them!
- Their are plenty of facebook groups where you can pick up things like this. Join your local sustainable living/zero waste group that can offer you glass jars or other storage containers for that matter!
- Local cafes and restaurants could also potentially give you the jars they don’t want. Worth a try asking, you never know.
